Description

Approaches and creative processes based on calligraphy.

Beginner intermediate level workshop designed for calligraphers and artists interested in investigating creative methodologies for calligraphy through a mixture of practical brushes and metal nibs. This meeting proposes that students work using their own knowledge of calligraphy, working with styles that make them feel at ease with ideas that will be outside that comfort zone.

Through simple practices, students will explore and extrapolate their own limits through investigations that lead them to discover and develop particular methodologies to walk paths full of identity and freshness. A process of searching for a unique and singular brand for your creations. Regardless of the style, each student will take a trip to invent images through traces of two types of instruments that are both intimate, known, mysterious and unpredictable.

Supplies

I always recommend some materials, but I understand (and prefer) that students use materials that they are comfortable with. In terms of size, I see the importance of working in at least two sizes to understand some relationships of contrast and speed. But the brand of the material doesn’t matter much.

  • 1 Metal pen, model P6, P5 or P4 (6, 5 or 4 mm), or Pilot Parallel Pen 6mm or 3.8mm or 2.4mm, or Speedball metal pen C0 or C1 or C2, or similar pen nib, at least 2.4 mm wide
  • 1 Pen handle
  • 1 Pack of black school ink (or similar) and a small ink reservoir
  • 1 Reservoir for water
  • 1 HB or B pencil (nº 2)
  • 1 Pad of Canson or similar drawing paper, size A3 in 90gsm, 120gsm, 140gsm or 180gsm
  • 1 Set of squares or rulers
  • Paper towels
  • *A round-tip brush or dropper to place ink in the pen reservoir of Speedball or similar nibs.
  • The suggestion for poster paper is A2 size parchment paper (40gsm) or another paper weighing no more than 75gsm to facilitate folding and sewing on the book.
    Optional materials:
  • Brushes – Short bristles: BR24 Raphael Kaerell Flat Brush: size 04 and 6 (3/16 ”and 1/4”) and / or 08/10 (5/16 ”/ 3/8”) Windsor & Newton: 995 (BR01) for ½ “and larger (but only for students who are thinking of producing very large pieces such as A2 format or larger. (Optional)
  • Brushes – Long bristles BR60. Simply Simmons Brushes 1/2 ” BR12. Rekab brush # 5 (1/4 ”)
  • Ink (optional) (colored inks: ecoline, liquid watercolor, Windsor & Newton calligraphy ink, Sepia inks, Pelikan 4001, liquid acrylic ink, etc.)
