Description

Do you want to create excitement, joy, serenity, or strength in a piece of calligraphic art? This workshop will explore your options for creating that emotion through your layout, emotional marks on paper and innovative lettering. We will experiment with tools, all types of medium, all kinds of “mark-making” methods and creative lettering. The goal is to expand your opportunities by giving you new tools, new skills in using your tools and inventive methods for creating exciting new letterforms. We’re going to play, make a mess and produce some of the best, most exciting work you’ve ever done.

Supplies

  • Lay-out bond paper pad – Prefer Borden & Riley Layout, but Canson or Strathmore drawing or sketch pads are fine
  • 1 full sheet (40″ x 25.5) Arches Text Wove paper – Pre-torn into 8 pieces (about 10 x 12”)
  • Any other paper scraps (Fabriano Ingres, Canson Mi-Tientes, Bugra, and any other papers you have). **The more paper you have available, the more opportunities to try other experiments
  • Prang or other watercolor set or tube watercolors and palette (if tube watercolor, a variety of colors)
  • A few tubes of acrylic of your choice (any brand)
  • Ink – Walnut ink, Pelikan 4001 or Bister (color of your choice)
  • A nice wide, flat brush (at least 1”)
  • 1 pointed brush (as good quality as you can afford) #1 or close to that (Winsor-Newton Sceptre Series brushes are blended synthetic and real hairs and are quite springy and a good value
  • Paint mixing brush (cheap, stiff, short-haired)
  • Old credit card you can cut
  • Cellulose kitchen sponge
  • Scissors
  • X-acto knife
  • Glue stick
  • Your writing tools (pens of choice & pen holders) – I like Speedball C-2 nib. You will need to include one larger pen (i.e. Automatic 3A or 4A, Parallel Pen (blue or green lid), Luthis Flat, Pratik Pen, or other wide pen, and (if you have one), a folded pen (i.e. ruling pen, Luthis Pen or Pratikpen)
  • Paper towels
  • 2 water pots (one for clean and one for dirty)
  • A few texts that you would like to write out (not too long)
